"Hey! Wha' Happen'?!" -- The Return of the Curse of YOU KNOW, FOR FILM.
Bonjour Blogarinos!
It's been quite some time since I last updated the old web-log. Much has changed, mainly my address and employment. The Upper East Side of Manhattan was traded for the quiet streets of the Brooklyn neighborhood of Greenwood Heights (aka SOUTH Slope). As for my new office of employment, in interest of full disclosure, I must come clean and admit to being a studio's hired goon now. Focus Features' wonderful Theatrical Distribution team acquired yours truly back in June. It has been a wonderful, eye-opening experience. I could not be part of a better, more passionate and film-savvy group of people. I didn't just join a team, but a family.
And, I have been torn on how to deal with this on the blog (how could I write objectively about film if I work within the industry?), but I will just try to avoid writing about Focus releases. However, if I can offer any objective insight into the distribution process, that will be handled here as well. After all, this is... you know, for film.

So is South Slope...you know...like "Karl" Slope?
Actually, no. It's an old Polish neighborhood with a nice mix of all sorts of people now (mainly different groups of Spanish people and a small handful of those gentrifying white people).
Nobody knows where Greenwood Heights is... according to Forgotten-NY.com the neighborhood has never had an official name ...it's just south of Park Slope, near the Greenwood Cemetery, so calling it SOUTH Slope was more to let people know where the neighborhood is located.
And, for the record, Karl would not feel out of place in the neighborhood.
Hey, Jason--Welcome to Brooklyn. I'm actually closer to downtown Brooklyn than to the Greenwood Cemetery, but not that far all things considered. I am sure our paths will cross soon. Let's make it happen.
And I'm glad you're blogging again. As for the conflict inherent in living on both sides of the fence, well, in my own rather puny way I've been there myself. There is no agreed-upon solution for everyone, and your bread-and-butter conflict makes it especially tough on you (if you avoid writing about Focus films, but pan some other distributor's movie, they'll interpret it in the most unflattering way, for obvious reasons). I don't really know what to say about that except that criticism and filmmaking feed each other, that they're really two sides of the same thing, and you can't NOT write about movies if that's one of your passions. So just do it, be fearless, and let the chips fall where they may.
Continued good luck to you.
So Karl would be at home, but his cell phone would work? I get it, especially since you know Karl won't keep his own cell phone from working. God, it would still work if he fucking swallowed it.
Matt,
It'll be impossible for me to avoid writing about Focus releases. It's certainly a tough line to draw, and you're definitely right that criticism and production feed into one another. Perhaps it is arrogant of me to assume such a line exists.
By the by, I christened the new apartment with a viewing of HOME. I enjoyed it very much! You definitely recreated the atmosphere and vibe of a house party. I feel like had been there before. Well done, good sir.
Hey Jason,
It's Erika, from Gage & NYU. How are ya? I just stumbled on this post while doing some web research on GWH. Are you enjoying the area? My boyfriend & I are thinking of buying a place in one of the apparently offensive new condos in the area. Any tips? Insider info?
Hope all is well!
hey Erika!
I'm nearing my year anniversary in GWH. I'm still a fan. While it doesn't have the hustle and bustle of Park Slope, we are slowly but surely developing our own identity (thanks to those new condos!).
My question to you is -- where exactly is the place you're looking at? If you're a little north, near PS (like btwn 16th-20th St. btwn 5th-6th Ave) -- there's a bunch of new places going up. Wine bars, restaurants, etc. We already have a great, great grocery store there -- Eagle Provisions. Farther south (near me on 22nd St), there's a little less, but it's still very nice.
GWH is fairly quiet for the most part. Lots of families. People from very, very different backgrounds (lots of Polish and Spanish).
I'm a fan of GWH! If you ever want a tour -- feel free to hit me up for it!
Best,
Jason
